Reading
Reading is the active construction of meaning in which higher-order thinking skills and strategies are used. Children will incorporate background knowledge and use appropriate strategies to infer meaning from written material. Prior knowledge is a major determiner of what students understand from what they read. Children who have been read to from an early age, will begin school with an intuitive understanding of story structure and our language.
Children's attitudes about reading affects not only how well they learn to read but how much they enjoy reading. By focusing on meaningful and enjoyable literature children experience immediate gratification. Children learn to read by reading, so they need plenty of time and opportunity to read on their own. Students themselves should select materials for independent reading to encourage the development of independence, self-confidence, and the habit of lifelong learning. Your child should read 20 minutes every night.
